WF featured at the Spontaneous Schooling Exhibition opening this Friday in London

6 workshops conducted by Workshops Factory to date in Poland and in the USA will be featured at the Spontaneous Schooling Exhibition, curated by Nous gallery as a part of London Festival of Architecture 2010.

The exhibition opens on Friday 18 June, 2010 at 6pm. The venue is: 3.01 Tea Building, 5 – 13 Bethnal Green Road, London E1 6JJ.

Thanks to the Faculty of Architecture, Warsaw University of Technology, 5 3d printed models from the very first WF workshop (wf_091) will become part of the exhibition as well.

Parametric Modeling and CAM Technologies at WAPW

“Parametric Modeling and CAM Technologies” was a seminar tutored by WF (Agata Kycia, Dorota Kabala, Krzysztof Gornicki, Krystian Kwiecinski and Michal Piasecki) at the WAPW (Warsaw University of Technology, School of Architecture). The seminar took place from October 2009 till February 2010 and was an elective course for master of architecture level students.

The aim of the seminar was to make students familiar with the notion of a CAD/CAM continuum. Students developed group projects using parametric modeler Generative Components. The projects where intended to be manufactured using a subtractive computer aided manufacturing technology of choice. The project above (by group 1: Joanna Bartos, Malgorzata Piotrowska, Jerzy Soltyk and Andrzej Zajkowski) was CNC milled and the one below (by group 4: Marcin Brzeski, Damian Pedrakowski, Patrycja Michalak, Agnieszka Rokicka and Maciej Rudnicki) was laser cut.

Rhino scripting workshop WF_091 tutored by WF (03.04.2009 – 05.04.2009)

WF_091 – a workshop co-organized by Workshops Factory and Warsaw University of Technology, School of Architecture – took place between 3rd and 5th of April 2009. The theme of the workshop was parametric urban furniture. We’ve used Rhino scripting as a generative procedure.

On Friday (3rd of April) we have started quite late – at 18.00 (or 6PM if you wish). The evening was filled with presentations. Dorota spoke about computer aided digital manufacturing, Krystian spoke about design process as a control of flow of information and I spoke about the spectrum of potential of generative procedures – trying to have the notion of optimization processes in mind.

Saturday (4th of April) started early. We begun with type-along session beggining at 10.00 and lasting till 14.00. After quick lunch participants divided themselves into groups of three. Their task was to write additional function to the script which we have provided them with. It was the function determining the actual shape of the seating.

Sunday (5th of April) was another, slightly less successful try to start early. Let’s say it all begun at 10.30. Groups gathered together to continue work on their scripts. Eventually first group (Michal, Lukasz and Andrzej) was ready and we’ve started the fabrication process. By the end of the day their prototype in 1:1 scale was ready.

Through Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we’ve managed to fabricate two more 1:1 prototypes by Ewa, Kama and Marta and Karolina, Gal and Tomek.

Workshops Factory is an association dedicated to spreading the knowledge on digital paradigm in design. We are planning to operate in Poland and beyond collaborating both with educational institutions and commercial entities.

WF_091 is the first workshop in collaboration with Warsaw University of Technology, School of Architecture. The language of the workshop is polish. It is going to take place between 03.04.09 (Friday) and 05.04.09 (Sunday) and it’s theme is Rhinoscripting and digital fabrication. We are going to deal with a design of parametric urban furniture and we are then going to fabricate their mock-ups in 1:1 scale. More information about the workshop follows here (unfortunately in Polish only). There are also some general information about Workshops Factory in English available. Finally – third option is just to take a look on our blog.

studying at Iaac in Barcelona

I have co-authored an article “How does it feel to study in Barcelona”, published in December’s issue of Architektura-Murator – a polish monthly design magazine. The authors of the article are (not accidentally) co-founders of Workshops Factory. It felt like back in the sunny Bcn, where the idea of WF was born, inspired by our common experience of studying at Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia). Gaweł Tyrała edited the text – many thanks.

Agata Kycia, Monika Szawiola, Krzysztof Gornicki and Dorota Kabala wrote about parametric design studio run by Marta-Male Alemany (wtih predominant usage of Top-Solid). Krystian Kwiecinski wrote about emergent cities studio run by Vicente Guallart and I wrote about self-sufficient buildings studio, run in the second semester by Willy Mueller and in the third one by Izaskun Chinchilla.

introducing workshops factory

We came up with the idea of Workshops Factory during a dinner at Rambla Poble Nou while still studying at Iaac in Barcelona. We (meaning Dorota Kabala, Agata Kycia, Monika Szawiola, Krzysiek Gornicki, Krystian Kwiecinski and me) are planning to organize workshops on digital parametric in design. First one is likely to take place in the first quarter of 2009. The talks with Warsaw University of Technology, School of Architecture and Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia in Barcelona are on. Most probably the theme of the workshop will be Rhino scripting and digital fabrication.

In the mean time, Dorota has prepared a short video about what we are planning to do.

Workshops Factory website functions as a blog which informs about all our work as a group as well as a showcase of our individual work related to digital paradigm in design.
